More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop Satoshi Yagisawa Recommended by Mr. Enoch Tong Yee Nok If you had a free afternoon, how would you spend it? Would you watch a movie? Take a nap? Or hang out with your friends? What about spending time in an old-fashioned Japanese bookstore? “More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop” is a sequel to “Days at the Morisaki Bookshop”. This book about daily life. There is no grand adventure. No mystery to solve and no treasures to find. It is about the daily life of Takako and the people around her. What binds all the characters together is their love of books. The Morisaki bookshop is ran by Satoru, Takako’s uncle, who is an avid reader. His shop is located in the Jimboch area in Tokyo. It is an area filled with a wide variety of bookstores. From new bestsellers to old forgotten manuscripts, you might have a chance of finding it there. Takako, the book’s main character, loves spending time at her uncle’s shop. It is a place of refuge for her to rest and be safe. Her uncle took care of her and allowed her to stay on the second floor during some troubled times in the first book. For Takako, the store is a home away from home. In this sequel, you will witness the ups and downs of life through Takako’s eyes, the confusion and sadness that she experiences as well as the joy and comfort that she finds. This book is about mundane daily life but it is a touching story that is definitely worth a read. Chibineko Kitchen Yuta Takahashi Recommended by Ms. Yeung Wai Nga The Chibineko Kitchen is a seaside restaurant located in a quiet town in Japan, around 84 kilometers away from Tokyo. It is only open in the morning, without any fancy décor nor signature dishes, but only a chalkboard at the entrance and a cat inside. However, it attracts diners from Tokyo to set off here at dawn. Why did they bother to wake up so early to take a two-hour train to such a remote restaurant for breakfast? It’s because Chibineko Kitchen serves remembrance meals (kagazen) which allows them to see and talk to their lost loved ones again. From a girl who felt sorry for her brother’s sacrifice of his life for saving her life to a boy who regretted speaking hurtful words to a girl whom he loved, experiencing this miracle relieves them from their grief and move on. The Chibineko Kitchen reminds me of a quote by Dayo Wong in the movie “The Last Dance” – ‘It’s not only the deaths who needs to free their souls for reincarnation, but also the living ones who needs to free themselves from their grief.’ Life is fragile. We can never guarantee our loved ones will accompany us forever. What we can do is to cherish every moment when we are together. I would highly recommend this book to those who search for a deeper meaning for life. More 2025 Selections She and Her Cat Makoto Shinkai and Naruki Nagakawa Recommended by Mr. Cheung Ho Lun Have you owned a cat? I have a lovely one, and I can tell you that cats are creatures that don’t need much looking after. They stretch out after taking long naps and sometimes even show their tummy to befriend you! Their independent nature lets them freely explore and play, often slipping through much smaller spaces than you'd think. This unique companionship is beautifully revealed in the book She and Her Cat. In this touching story, a young woman meets her cat, Daisuke, who narrates their experiences together. Just like my own cat, Daisuke observes his owner’s life and the challenges she faces, offering a perspective that highlights the profound bond between them. Daisuke’s observations reveal the woman’s struggles with loneliness, love and the challenges she faces every day as she becomes a young adult. His presence serves as a comforting reminder that, much like the joy our pets bring us, companionship can help us navigate tough times. This book is filled with moments that reflect the beauty of simple everyday life like sharing a meal or enjoying a sunset. Each page invites you to appreciate the small joys that are often left unnoticed. Whether you’re a cat owner or simply love animals, She and Her Cat is a heartfelt exploration of love, loyalty, and the simple yet profound connections we share with those around us. Reading this charming story, you might find yourself reflecting on your own relationships with your pets and the world. Happy reading! Rowley Jefferson's Awesome Friendly Adventure Jeff Kinney Recommended by Mr. Lai Chi Yuen In "Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Adventure," readers are taken on an exhilarating journey filled with humor, imagination, and unexpected twists. The story follows Roland, a young boy who learns that his mother has been kidnapped by the White Warlock and taken to the ominous Ice Fortress. Upon hearing this distressing news, Roland gathers his courage and, alongside his loyal friend Garg—a fierce barbarian—sets out on an adventurous quest to rescue her. Throughout their travels, Roland and Garg encounter a myriad of challenges and fantastical characters. They navigate the whimsical world of pixies and trolls, resolving conflicts that arise between these two magical factions. Their adventure further leads them to Medusa, from whom they bravely rescue a team of members, showcasing themes of friendship and bravery. Adding to the excitement of their quest are the remarkable allies they meet along the way, including a one-eyed wizard, Sherlock Holmes, and the enchanting Little Mermaids. These characters not only assist Roland in his mission but also enrich the storyline with their unique personalities and skills. One of the most intriguing elements of the narrative is Roland's ultimate realization: the White Warlock, initially perceived as the enemy, is not what he seems. Jeff Kinney, the author, masterfully intertwines his imaginative storytelling with the in-character commentary from Greg, who provides humorous insights throughout the adventure. This clever narrative device allows readers to anticipate what might happen in the next chapter, creating an engaging and interactive reading experience. "Awesome Friendly Adventure" is undoubtedly a page-turner. Its combination of exhilarating plotlines and laugh-out-loud humor keeps readers thoroughly entertained. Diary of An Awesome Friendly Kid Jeff Kinney Recommended by Ms. Lee Man Yan What do you usually do with your best friends? Do you enjoy playing pranks on them? The Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid illustrates the daily life of two middle school boys, Rowley and Greg, from the perspective of one of the protagonists, Rowley. Unlike the other Wimpy Kid books, this one offers a glimpse into their everyday lives through Rowley's eyes. Since Greg always dreams of becoming famous in the future, he asks Rowley to change the diary into his biography. At Greg's request, this diary transforms into a biography of Greg, capturing all the embarrassing and adventurous moments of their friendship. The story not only highlights the fun and mischief of friendship but also touches on the meaningful themes of loyalty and support. Rowley’s steadfast kindness contrasts with Greg’s self-centered antics, showcasing the differences in their relationship. Although Rowley sometimes portrays Greg in a disapproving light, this also reveals how much he values their friendship. Hurting but loving—that's what friendship is like. The illustration style of this book makes you feel like you have stumbled upon someone’s diary. The handwriting font and playful, child-like graphics remind me of my carefree childhood. From playing superheroes together to staging silly pranks, the humorous interactions between Rowley and Greg bring back memories of my best friend in high school. I’m sure you’ll find yourself resonating with Rowley and Greg's experiences, reflecting on your childhood adventures, and perhaps even reigniting the playful spirit of your youth. Dive into their world and relive the joy of childhood friendship. The Goodbye Cat Hiro Arikawa Recommended by Ms. Tong Ho Yan Do you like adorable and fluffy cats? The Diary of A Young Girl Anne Frank & Anne Frank's Diary: The Graphic Adaptation Ari Folman Recommended by Ms. Lee Man Yan How was your life from the ages of 13 to 15? What would you do if you had to hide from the Nazis? Despite facing adversity, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl Anne Frank began the habit of keeping a diary during her days of hiding from the Nazi Germans in World War II, hoping to one day publish her life in the Secret Annex, which is an old building for hiding. The Diary of A Young Girl is an autobiography by Anne Frank detailing the daily lives of her and her family during the time they hid from the Nazis during the Holocaust. Anne’s diary is filled with a typical teenage girl’s desire for freedom, aspirations for her promising future, and constant fear during a desperate time under the threat of Nazis from a first-person perspective vividly. It serves not only as a personal record of a girl’s transition and self-discovery from childhood to adolescence but also as a poignant testament to the cruelty brought by the historical war and holocaust. As you read the book, you can feel a teenage girl’s curiosity about growing up, romantic relationships, and the world even during the darkest moments of her life. Despite the horrors of war and the Holocaust, she clings to hope for a better future and the possibility of ending the war and the Holocaust. This reminds me to treasure my life in a warless society. Anne once said, ‘Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.’ Life is tough, so you need to be tougher. Even a thirteen-year-old girl living in war holds a strong faith in her life, what kind of excuse do we have? To learn more about what happened to Anne and the lives affected by the Holocaust, The Diary of a Young Girl is an excellent choice. This year, I would like to introduce a book about an autistic boy investigates the murder a dog, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. All this time Mikki Daughtry and Rachael Lippincott Recommended by Mr. Leung King Hang Without a doubt, this is one of the most beautiful books I have read and it is right on my list of favorite books and, of course, one of my best reads of the year. This story is about loss, hope and the importance of finding ourselves. It teaches us to walk through life being the leaders of our journey, where we can have companions, but not depend on them to know where we want to go. In the story, as Kyle tried to move on with his life after losing his girlfriend, there was something magical in the air. And that was Marley. She is a wonderful character, and a heart-healing angel that everyone of us wishes we had in our lives. Even though she also needed someone to love her, no one deserves it more than her. She is a storyteller who leaves no room for sad stories. It was wonderful to read about her, listen to her and imagine her with her flowers and her yellow clothes. This book means much more than what it seems. It has a surprising plot with a slightly painful twist, being so incredible that no one will be able to stop reading until they end up with tears in their eyes. If you like these types of stories, you give it a chance and you will not be disappointed.
